ARTIST'S STATEMENT

Abby Zhang

Abby studied oil painting under Boris Kokhno, retired professor from the renowned Russian Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg, and Alexander Zimin, internationally acclaimed Russian painter.

Her style combines vibrant, sophisticated colors with expressive brushwork, balancing the looseness of impressionism with a more structured approach to depicting form. It captures the fleeting effects of light and atmosphere while evoking a deep emotional resonance.

In addition to Russian impressionism, she is also influenced by Japanese and Chinese artistic principles such as simplicity, mindful use of white space, artistic conception, wabi-sabi (finding beauty in imperfection and transience), and a deep reverence of nature.

Abby’s work has been showcased in prominent exhibitions including the Oil Painters of America National Juried Exhibition, the Salon International Juried Exhibition, and the California Art Club Gold Medal Exhibition.

She is an artist member of the prestigious California Art Club, founded in 1909 and shaped by early California impressionists such as Edgar Payne, William Wendt and Guy Rose.
